Health - Children's Speech and Language Therapy (SALT)

Children's Speech and Language Therapy supports children and young people with Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN) to help them reach their ful potential. 

The service also provides advice and support to families and professionals working with children. 

How the service supports

Speech and Language Therapists assess and support children with a wide range of needs including:

  • Delayed and disordered language development
  • Speech sound difficulties
  • Stammering
  • Voice disorders
  • Social communication differences, including autism
  • Severe learning difficulties
  • Physical disabilities (for example, cerebral palsy)
  • Hearing impairment
  • Maxillofacial conditions (such as cleft palate)
  • Feeding and swallowing difficulties

Therapists work with children, families and settings to develop strategies that support communication, understanding and participation in everyday activities. 

They also help parents and carers build confidence in supporting their child's communication, as well as feeding and swallowing where relevant. 

Drop-in support

The service offers "Walk in for Talking" drop-in sessions.

These sessions allow parents and carers to access support without an appointment if ther have concerns about a child's speech, language or communication development.

At these sessions:

  • Advice and guidance can be provided
  • If needed, a referral can be made for further support
  • Children may be offered a more detailed assessment through an Initial Assessment Clinic
