Health - CAMHS - Psychiatry Pathway

The Psychiatry Pathway provides specialist support for children and young people with mental health needs where medication may be considered as part of their care.

The service is usually accessed following involvement from other CAMHS teams, when further assessment is needed.

How the service supports

Refferals to the Psychiatry Pathway are made by CAMHS professionals. The team then carries out detailed assessments to understand needs and consider the most appropriate support.

This may include:

  • Psychiatric assessments
  • Considering whether medication could be helpful
  • Ongoing reviews of medication where it is already being used
  • Developing a clear understanding (formulation) of a young person's needs

The team follows national guidance to ensure safe and effective care, including:

  • NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) guidelines
  • British Association of Psychopharmacology recommendations
  • STOMP guidance, which focuses on reducing unnecessary medication, particularly for yougn people with learning difficulties and/or autism

The overall aim is to ensure that any use of medication is appropriate, carefully monitored and part of a broader support plan.
