Education - SENART - SEN Assessment and Review Team
The SEN Assessment and Review Team (SENART) is responsible for managing Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs).
An EHCP is a single plan for children and young people aged 0-25 who have Special Educational Needs or Disabilities (SEND). It brings together support across education, health and social care.
What is an EHCP?
An EHCP is used when a child or young person needs a higher level of support to help them make progress.
It is created following a detailed assessment of their:
- Educational needs
- Health needs
- Care and support needs
The plan ensures that all these needs are considered together and supported in a coordinated way.
An EHCP is a legal (statutory) document and is guided by the SEND Code of Practice (0-25 years).
Requesting an assessment
Before requesting an EHC needs assessment, schools and settings are expected to have taken appropriate steps to support the child or young person through SEND Support (their existing resources and strategies).
If progress remains limited despite this support, a request can be made for an Education, HEalth and Care Needs Assessment (EHCNA).
This assessment involves professionals from different services working together to understand the child or young person's needs.
Who can request an assessment?
A request for an EHC needs assessment can be made by:
- A parent or carer (or someone acting on their behalf)
- A young person aged 16 or over (or someone acting on their behalf)
- A school or post-16 setting (with the knowledge and agreeement of the young person and their family)
