Wakefield's Graduated Approach to SEND
For the last ten months the Wakefield Council has been working with various stakeholders (health, educational psychologists, parents through the parent carer forum, social care, advisory teachers and specialist school headteachers) across the authority to develop Wakefield’s graduated approach to SEND.
It is a guide for educational settings to assess and identify the needs of pupils, and to put in place the appropriate support. It will also support parents when they are working with their child's school to know what support their child is receiving to help them in class. The document covers:
- Early years
- Speech, Language and Communication needs
- Cognition and Learning needs
- Communication and Interaction
- Social Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH)
- Guidance for Deaf Children and young people
- Hearing Impairment
- Visual Impairment
- Physical/Medical needs
- Sensory, Physical Medical PFA Outcomes and Provision
The graduated approach document is in its trial phase and being shared with every educational setting within Wakefield. From now until May 2025, colleagues within Wakefield Inclusion SEND Support Service (WISENDSS) will be working with settings to interpret and embed this document. WISENDSS colleagues will be collecting data, feedback and the useability of the document from settings. In the coming months, more opportunities to collect feedback from parents will be offered though the Parent Carer Forum.
Once changes have been made, the official role out of the document will commence in September 2025.
